Understanding
the Brand and Audience
the Brand and Audience
Brand Analysis
I began by defining the brand’s values, story, and market positioning. This involved detailed discussions with stakeholders to align on the brand’s vision and goals.
Target Market Research
Understanding the demographics, preferences, and lifestyle of the target audience was crucial. For example, if the brand targets men aged 35-60, I consider their style preferences, daily activities, and purchasing behavior.
Research and Inspiration
Trend Analysis
I conduct thorough research on current market trends, competitor products, and emerging technologies in watchmaking. This helps in identifying opportunities and ensuring the designs are contemporary and competitive.
Inspirational Sources
I drew inspiration from a variety of sources such as music, hotrods, architecture, fashion, and tattoo culture. For instance, for a design with a nod towards the Bronze Age, I studied historical artifacts and motifs as well as researched the meaning and benefits of each gemstone used for the dials.
Conceptualization and Design
Ideation
I brainstormed and sketched initial concepts, focusing on unique selling points and innovative features that aligned with the brand’s identity. This stage involved a lot of creativity and exploration.
Material Selection
Choosing the right materials was critical. I considered factors such as durability, aesthetics, and cost. For example, selecting malachite and lapis lazuli for the watch faces to evoke a sense of luxury and sophistication.
Design Detailing
I refined the sketches into detailed designs using software from Adobe Creative Suite. This included defining the watch case, dial, hands, strap, and other components to represent a finished piece.
Prototyping and Testing
Prototype Development
I collaborate with representatives form the factory to create prototypes. This stage involved translating the design into a 3D rendered schematic that represented the physical model, ensuring it meets both aesthetic and functional requirements. Using 3D printers we created prototype samples
Usability Testing
Conducting usability tests was essential to evaluate the watch’s comfort, functionality, and overall user experience. Feedback from these tests was used to make necessary adjustments.
Collaboration and Production
Manufacturer Coordination
I worked closely with manufacturers to ensure the designs are produced to the highest quality standards. This involved specifying materials, finishes, and assembly processes. I had to create visual mockups, gather material samples, and share inspiration with them to communicate the desired look and feel.
Quality Control
Overseeing the production process to ensure each watch met the brand’s quality benchmarks. This included inspecting the final product for any defects or inconsistencies, requesting vacuum and water pressure testing to ensure the highest quality.
Final Presentation and Launch
Brand Alignment
Ensuring that the final product was consistent with the brand’s image and marketing strategy. This included collaborating with marketing teams to create compelling product presentations and launch campaigns.
Feedback Loop
Gathering feedback from customers and stakeholders post-launch to understand the product’s reception and identify areas for improvement in future designs.
By meticulously navigating each of these steps, I ensured that every watch not only embodied the brand’s unique identity but also delivered exceptional value and satisfaction to the end user.
