A series of three 24" x 24" mixed-media art on wood panel, this work is an exploration of the countercultural and iconoclastic spirit, using spray paint, acrylic, enamel, and collage to channel a defiant 'age of dissent.' The composition centers on fragmented, halftone-dot portraits of powerful musicians—overlaid with an intense, neon-hued graffiti-and-splatter background. Cassette tapes and 45 records added to represent my introduction to each genre anchoring the pieces in my lived experience within NYC hardcore and punk culture.
In a world of digital algorithms, these pieces are an assertion of the messy, analog, and heroic soul of human inspiration.
Listen to three different genres that all share the same unique origins. All emerged as raw, grassroots movements that prioritized DIY production and cultural authenticity over polished commercial appeal. Each genre served as a powerful vehicle for marginalized youth to voice social and political frustrations, often using high-energy rhythms to command attention in urban environments. Despite their distinct sounds, they shared a rebellious spirit that disrupted the musical status quo by reclaiming the airwaves for the working class.
